Teenage supermoto ace Lewis Cornish had yet another amazing race result last weekend. After scooping a podium spot at the previous British Masters meeting the Norfolk based Nameplate Services/DCR racer was full of confidence heading into round two of the 2012 British Supermoto Championships at Rednal Raceway, Shropshire. Lewis quickly laid down a marker during qualifying for the 450 Elite races by setting second quickest lap time. However a series of crashes, one being caused by an unexplained mechanical failure meant that he finished the day battered and bruised with only a best place finish of forth in race two to lift his spirits. As the team worked late to prepare a spare machine for the following day’s Open Elite races Lewis consoled himself with the fact that his speed is there and a change of luck would be sure to see him challenging for the lead.

During qualifying, the difficult and changeable track conditions prompted Lewis to put in some hot lap times early in the session just in case the weather took a turn for the worse. Setting some blistering times on slick tyres on the damp tarmac Lewis was soon top of the leader board and when light rain finally started to fall the team pulled him off the track as it was clear that nobody could better his stunning pace. Lewis’ nearest rival was over half a second slower and this was the Norfolk youngster’s first Elite Pole position. Race one and in the mad dash to the first turn Lewis was pushed down to forth place but he soon made up time and was hunting down the leader Douggie Cunningham. On the dirt section Lewis’ speed was clear and as he moved in to make a pass on Cunningham, Lewis hit his rival’s rear wheel which saw Cornish hit the ground stalling the bike. By the time he had restarted the race he was dead last and with his goggles discarded he set off in pursuit of the pack. An amazing display of firm but calculated riding allowed Lewis to reel in the rider’s in front and battle his way through to 13th position at the flag. This meant a 13th place on the grid for race two and in yet another amazing display of aggressive and controlled riding Cornish forced his way past rider after ride to cross the line in a well deserved 5th position.

Both the team’s riders had great results in their races with Mat Ford-Dunn (number 90) finishing 1st and 2nd in his two SM30 races (for riders over 30 years old), and Anthony Ford – Dunn (Number 4) finishing 3rd and 3rd in his two SM open races against the very best supermoto riders in Spain.

Anthony was frustrated with his 3rd position as he suffered from a lack of rear end grip to be able to run at the leaders pace, but we think we have solved that problem now and he’s got his sights set on that top step of the podium at the next round of the Spanish Championships held at the Lleida street circuit, Catalunya, on the 17th June.

Anthony had qualified in 3rd position for the SM Open (elite class) and knew he was going to have a tough ride to beat the two Spanish riders next to him on the grid. The first of his two races saw Anthony chasing Israel Escalera and Francesco Cucharrera for the lead and the three of them broke away from the rest of the field in the early stages of the race before a lack of rear grip from Anthony’s bike meant that he had to settle for 3rd positions whilst Escalera narrowly beat Cucharrera after a race long battle for the lead that thrilled the watching fans.

The second race was even more dramatic with Escalera falling on the first lap in the dirt section leaving Anthony no option but to run over Escalera’s bike that nearly sent him over the handlebars of his own bike! Anthony then rode a frantic couple of laps to get himself into 2nd position before a small crash saw him drop to 3rd at the flag. The race was made even more dramatic by two Spanish riders crashing together on the start finish straight, that then saw race officials and Guardia civil having to separate the riders, who were unhurt in the incident, but clearly unhappy with the cause of the crash.

Round 2 of the 2012 Motoworks/MVD Racewear Queensland Supermoto Titles takes place May 18-20 at The Whitsundays Motorsports Complex. Riders from all over QLD and NSW will be there for the historic occasion as the first State Motorcycle Title to be held at the newly completed race track. Round 1 was hotly contested by the best Supermoto riders in the country and Round 2 at The Whitsundays Motorsports Complex should be just as entertaining. Round 2 will also host juniors, clubman and quads for the first time in a number of years so there will be plenty of action across the weekend.

Future Sport Motorcycles – S1 – Over 450cc

Ross Taylor dominated Round 1 with 8 victories from 8 starts giving him a handy lead over second placed John Newton. Behind Newton and Taylor the championship ladder is very congested with only 15 points seperating the next four riders. Dave Oliver, Paul Dawson and Tom Gardiner are all very confident and motivated after spending 2 days testing over the easter break at the Whitsundays track and could be the big improvers for the round. Taylor could almost wrap up the championship if he remains undefeated at Round 2 while the next 5 riders could set themselves up a podium with a solid performance.

Future Sport Motorcycles – S2 – 450cc

After an eventful Round 1 Beau Laing leads Jarrod Koppe by 20 points. Both riders had thier share of drama’s and wins so its still anyone’s guess as to who will end up with the number 1 plate. Laing, Koppe and local Luke Burgess have all ridden the new track giving them a further advantage over the rest of the 450cc class. Peter Cox finished round 1 in 3rd place and will have his work cut out for him holding off the remaining field of talented riders.
