So you’re walking down a quiet street of Västerås, Sweden, when you hear the all to familiar sound of the single cylinder used in anger. More than likely, you’ve just had your first introduction to the Superretards. Recently I had the opportunity to speak with SWK, member and founder of Superretards. (Via email).
I’ll start at the beginning I guess. Where were you born and raised?
I’m was born and raised in Västerås, 100km from Stockholm. The city have about 150 000 citizens and i still live there today.
What faith were you born into, do you remember? Honda, Yamaha, KTM, Husqvarna, Agnostic( Being that you believe that there is a manufacturer, but you’re not sure which one)?
I don’t know actually, my family wasn’t very motor interested at all. But when it comes to Supermoto i just love the KTM:s. Never had any trouble so far. Yet! Haha…
About what age did you start riding?
I started riding pretty late, I think a was about 14 or so when I got my first bike. A Suzuki 125cc dirtbike. I didn’t ride it that much because it sucks to ride a dirtbike alone on open fields. I wish I had the opportunity to go to a motocross stadium or something. When I was 15 I got a moped, a Honda Mt50 and that was the first time I realized how much fun it was to just be able to go everywhere! I drove that piece of shit pretty much anywhere I could. All my friends were riding mopeds as well! We did some crazy shit! Haha…
When did you start to become involved with SuperMoto’s? Why?
When reach the age of 21, you’re allowed to take the drivers license test for a heavy bike. I bought a Suzuki sv1000n and got the license pretty easy. I think I just took about 4 lessons and then I was all set. But as soon as I got out on the streets I ran into some guys driving Supermoto’s and that looked way more fun than just going really fast. It’s an amazing feeling to ride next to some badasses popping wheelies like nothing and you just wanna learn it yourself. I got the license in September of ’06 and in late november the first snow usally comes, and as soon as the first snow landed on the ground, I put out my bike for sale.
What was your first SuperMoto?
The next spring I got my first Supermoto. A KTM660 Smc ’04, and it’s a very good bike to learn to do wheelies; thanks to the power of the engine and the weight. It’s easy to do “power wheelies” on it and the weight helps the bike to be more stable. I think it took about 2 weeks for me to master a real wheelie with shifting and all that. It’s much easier to learn when you got a couple of guys to ride with and you can watch how they’re doing it.
What bike(s) are you currently riding?
I’m riding a KTM 525 Exc ’06. I bought it back in 2007 from the Swedish legend “Ghostrider”. He bought it to film his fifth DVD where he drives a Supermoto thru Stockholm with the police chasing him. He helped me get my first helmet-cam and told we what stuff I needed to buy to be able to make my own videos.
You have a site on YouTube. When did you start posting videos?
I first posted a video in 2007. I think I uploaded “Wheelies, Stoppies and crashes” as the first vid. We just got out and my two friends were trying to get pull of some 12 o’clocks but they didn’t cover up the back brake and ended up crashing all the time. If you watch closely in the background of that video you can see me training to wheelie, that was the first two weeks I was talking about. Haha…
What made you choose the name, “Superretards”?
The name Superretards just popped up in my head when I had the first video ready and I needed a channel to upload it to. I simply just registered the name SuperRetards. Supermotard, and you’re driving like a retard. The name SuperRetards fits us really well!
At the time of this interview, your YouTube channel has over 1.1 Million hits. Were your expecting it to become so popular?
No, not at all. Why I even began posting were because I thought there was really good sportbike videos but almost no Supermoto videos. I just wanted to share the fun we had when riding like we did. We don’t try to play cool for to the camera and trying to show off as the haters always thinks. Dude, buy a got damn Supermoto and join us FFS. I just wanna make good videos for all the Supermoto lovers out there. Obviously people like it… Haha…
What are your goals for the SuperMoto community. What would you like to see happen. Both locally, and globally?
Our goal is to make the Supermoto the natural choice for the younger guys growing up and istead of getting a sportbike as your first bike. If you f**k up on a Supermoto your problably doing around 80-90km/h popping a wheelie and slide and burn your ass compared to a sportbike where you go way faster smashing into a car or flying into the woods. Chance of survival is better on a Supermoto in my opinion.
And in a near future we’re gonna host a big get toghether with other swedish supermoto groups. It’s gonna be a stunt crew called “GBGX3M”, a clothing brand called “Pimpstar” and SuperRetards ofcourse. I’m planning this event right now so i don’t have all the details ready but it’s gonna be awesome! I think our fans is really going enjoy this!
You do some pretty crazy stunts, both on and off road, does it concern you about the possible danger of riding like that, especially when you’re on public roads?
Of course, it can be dangerous! We’ve been riding for about 5 years and so far, we haven’t had any major accidents. This summer I did have a pretty nasty crash into a new guy who didn’t pay attention to our “Retards rules”. When you ride in a big group you should have rules that everybody knows:
- Never shift lane without checking over your shoulder.
- If you are infront, don’t ever brake without checking behind you if you are on a stright away. The guy behind you can be on his back wheele and don’t have the time to take the bike down and brake.
- Common sense! Never irritate the police or your surrounding more than you need to. And know your limits! Pushing boundries is for closed roads.
This is so obvious to us, but when you ride with new guys, we always tell them to stay in the back and observe for the first couple of times. You have to trust the guys you ride with…
What about law enforcement? Your crew would be gaining notoriety by now. Do the possible legal ramifications come into play, when your front wheel is pointing to the sky?
Yes, the police know us pretty well by now. And the last thing we want to is to give the SuperMoto’s a bad reputation, but, you should see the peoples reaction when we gome brappin’ thru the city; people go nuts and screaming that we should do a wheelie.
How many times have you “crashed” when you were learning to wheelie?
Yeah, you crash sometimes when your learning. It’s a part of the process, in my opinion; but learn to cover the back brake! Always cover the back brake! A Wheelie without the back brake covered is like “Having sex without a girl!” Haha…
What’s the longest wheelie you’ve done?
I think to longest is about 5km. I’m not that skilled when it comes to turn sharp when doing wheelies and it’s hard to find long straight aways that long without a sharper turn. But we got a couple of guys that are insane and can wheelie for the time it takes to be numb i your hands. That’s just retarded!
Do the “Superretards” professionally stunt? If not, do you intend to?
No, we don’t intend on being a stunt team. We are more into seeing the world as a big playground! But I always encourage the younger guys to begin stunting at younger years. If I were 15 again, I would have begun stunting right away!
What do you see as the future for the “Superretards”?
We’re gonna continue doing what we’ve been doing this year. I speak to Jenzino (Pimpstar) almost daily and we have started a really sweet collaboration. Pimpstar is going to release a SuperRetards Edition Tee to sell in their webshop in the near future! And we’ve also got our first sponsor a couple of weeks ago, Arosracing, which is a bikeshop in Västerås. I’m so glad that people appreciate what we do and want to help us. Thanks Sonja and Pimpstar! Let’s do this…
Where do you think SuperMoto’s are going generally?
I really hope the interest grows, thanks to us and the rest of the awesome crews, pushing for the Supermoto community to grow!
Any final words?
If your planning on getting a Supermoto to get girls. Forget it! Girls are stupid when it comes to bikes and everything, except sportbikes with a lot af plastic. I’ve heard many times chicks saying “Look at that guy, he’s like 30 and he still rides his moped. What a looser…!”. If you are handsome enought to get girls anyhow, buy a Supermoto and get a crew! You’re not gonna be disappointed… Best thing in life, except sex! Haha…
