News: Dutch Motor Woman of the Year

The nominees for the Motor Vrouw van het Jaar 2012, loosely translated Motor Woman of the Year, have been announced. Included is Dutch SuperMoto racer, Nikki van der Spek. Nikki has graciously agreed to write a bit about the competition, as well as SuperMoto in Holland.

Hello Australian SuperMoto riders,

First of all excuse me for the possible faults in my english writing. My name is Nikki van der Spek and I’m living in the Netherlands. Since 2008 I’ve been competing in the Dutch Open National Supermoto Championship. The national class consists of approximately 100 supermoto riders, but I’m the only woman amongst all the men.

They (SuperMoto Magazine – Australia) asked me to write about riding SuperMoto in the Netherlands. As you probably know, Holland is not that big a country. When I watch the SuperMoto movies on Youtube in Australia, I can’t help to notice all the nice tracks. Unfortunately, Holland is a lot smaller in comparison to Australia, so here we have to be satisfied with one regular SuperMoto track, The Midland track in Lelystad. Most other races are being held on so called streetcircuits.

These streetcircuits are usually located in industrial area’s, so we drive on closed public roads. On the parts of the industrial area’s where there is an open area, they create the offroad parts of the track. In Holland the soil is usually sand or dirt, and because it rains a lot in Holland, most of our races look more like motocross races. It’s hard to compare these tracks with a lot of SuperMoto tracks located in the rest of the world, and if i tell you that my off-road riding skills are not my best skills, you’ll probably understand that I have to gain my succes on the tarmac.

This year the Dutch Supermoto Championship has 12 races. Unfortunately I can’t compete in all the races. We also have our own business, a driving school for motorcyclists, with advanced training courses in the weekends. This takes up a lot of our time, but I hope I can compete in most of the races.

My supermoto is a pink and black Yamaha YZ450F. The pink on the bike is more like a sort of psychological warfare to the male riders around me. I love to see their faces when they are being overhauled by a girl on a pink SuperMoto LOL.

I’d like to ask the SuperMoto riders in Australia for a favour. In Holland there is an election for the Female Motorcyclist of the Year 2012. Together with 4 other women, I am nominated for this title. To win this title, and therefore get to promote the SuperMoto sport, I need a lot of votes, so I would really appreciate it to get your votes.

You can vote for me using the following link: http://www.radioveronica.nl/special/motorvrouw-van-het-jaar-2012.

To help you fill in the vote form I tried to translate the form:

M/V = (M)Male or V(Female)

Voornaam = name

Tussenvoegsel = Don’t need to fill that in.

Achternaam = Last name

E-mail adres = Yep…. Your email adress

Mark the circle: O Nikki van der Spek

The following : Houd mij op de hoogte van het laatste nieuws van motorbeurs Utrecht.

Mark the circle: O Nee (Otherwise they will keep you informed of all their latest news, you don’t want that.)

If you mark the last square checkbox at the bottom you can win 2 tickets to the Dutch MotoGP in Assen. Thanks for helping me and I hope to come to Australia someday. Maybe ride some of your SuperMoto tracks.

Thanks and keep enjoying riding your SuperMoto’s !!

Nikki
